How we research

Every guide follows the same rules:

• Prices come from a named source with a date, such as RepairPal Fair Price Estimator national averages. We do not make up numbers. Your local price will differ.
• Safety advice is cautious. When in doubt we tell you to stop and get help.
• Consumer rights come from the FTC and state agencies like the California Bureau of Automotive Repair.
• Recalls and safety: NHTSA. Finding qualified techs: ASE. Your owner’s manual is the final word on your car’s maintenance schedule.
• Each guide shows its sources and when it was last reviewed. We re-check prices regularly.
